It’s official—Simone Biles, hailed by many as the greatest gymnast of all time, has done it again!
This past Sunday, at the US Gymnastics Championships in sunny San Jose, California, Biles took home her eighth national all-around title.
With that feat, the 26-year-old shattered yet another glass ceiling by becoming the oldest woman to claim victory at the championships.
Rewriting history, Simone outdid not only her closest competition—Shilese Jones, who trailed by 3.9 points—but also broke a longstanding record.
Alfred Jochim, a name synonymous with gymnastic greatness, won his seventh all-around gold medal way back in 1933.
Now, almost a century later, Simone’s eighth title elevates her to a pedestal all her own.
“I think it feels really special,” Biles told NBC, the network that aired the championships.
“I’ve been doing it for so long, I feel like I don’t think about numbers, I think about my performance. And I think, overall, I hit eight for eight (routines). … I guess it’s a lucky number this year.”
But what’s jaw-dropping is Simone’s unparalleled focus and form even after a lengthy break from major competitions.
The four-time Olympic gold medalist was in her element, locking in the all-around title with an astounding 15.400 on her signature floor exercise—a routine that never fails to take our breath away.
When she walked off the floor, the crowd couldn’t contain their excitement.
A standing ovation roared through the stadium, and as she made her way through the sea of applause, her teammates and coaches greeted her with arms wide open.
Their hugs and cheers were the perfect icing on her victory cake.
The love for Biles didn’t stop there.
Her teammate Jordan Chiles followed her performance, and before launching into her own routine, she gestured to the crowd to keep the applause going.
“It’s really amazing. Everybody in here believes in me,” Biles gushed later, referring to her close-knit gymnastic family and the amped-up fans.
“So I just need to start believing in myself a little bit more, but it feels amazing and I love the fans, I love the crowd. It was really special.”
So, what’s next for Simone?
Well, she’s playing her cards close to her chest when it comes to future Olympic plans.
“I like to keep (my goals) personal just so that I know what I am aiming for,” she revealed to NBC.
“I’m trying to move a little bit differently this year than I have in the past. So I think it’s working so far, so I’m gonna keep it a little bit secretive.”
Simone’s triumphant return follows a challenging period in her career.
After withdrawing from several events in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics due to a mental block known as the “twisties,” she took a two-year hiatus.
But her recent performances make it clear—she’s back and stronger than ever, pulling off moves that no other female gymnast has ever landed in competition.
And as if we needed another reason to keep our eyes on Simone, her latest win secures her a spot in the upcoming world championships starting September 30 in Antwerp, Belgium.
Already the most decorated gymnast in US history with 32 medals under her belt, one can only wonder—what other records is Simone Biles going to smash next?
