During the 2018 Australian Drill Dance Championships, 16 ladies dazzle the crowd with their encore performance.
The group has chosen to dance to the classic hit of Queen, “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Watching how they have created their steps and formations to fit the song perfectly is beyond awesome.
The British rock band’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” is a timeless piece of music that everybody loves listening to. It has a unique blend of Opera, ballad, and hard rock. Freddie Mercury wrote this song for the album of the band A Night at the Opera, released in 1975.
It topped the UK Singles Chart for more than two months. Even after Mercury’s death in 1991, the song topped the charts for five weeks, making it UK’s third best-selling single of all time.
The girls wow the crowd with their synchronized movements and incredible formations.
The drill dance teams have to be precise in their movements as they need to be in unison. These teams are also known as dance squads, and they are often seen performing in games and especially in events inside the school campus.
This is not the same with cheerdancing because they don’t perform those crazy jumps and acrobatic moves. There is no cheering that happens. Drill dance teams are expected to create routines for a certain song or theme that they will have to perform in a simultaneous fashion.
Meet the Black Diamonds.
They opt to be dressed in a dual-colored outfit. One side is black, and the other half is multicolored. Each girl is carrying two orange fans that resemble giant feathers. Using these as props, they can create a beautiful dance on stage that surprise the spectators.
Standing still in their position, the girls are now ready to interpret the classic song with their incredible moves. And upon hearing their cue,
“Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy? Caught in a landslide. No escape from reality.”
The ladies gracefully turn and move their props. They make the song come alive with their hand movements and formations.
Impressive colors and poses all around
With the ladies’ effort to give the best show to the judges and spectators, they also promote team spirit and loyalty. They must avoid making the slightest mistake. For this reason, they need to be coordinated – mentally and physically.
Using their massive fans, they create awesome formations on stage that wow the audience. It is evident that they have practiced their routine so many times and memorized every movement by heart because they are flawless in their execution. They raise their fans and sway them side to side, looking quite spectacular.
On the part,
“Any way the wind blows doesn’t really matter to me….”
The ladies take a formation where they raise their fans and move them as if the wind is blowing them.
Another remarkable sequence they have performed is in the part where Freddie Mercury sang the words,
“I see a little silhouette of a man,
Scaramouch, Scaramouch, will you do the Fandango!
Thunderbolts and lightning, very, very frightening me
Galileo, Galileo”
They now use the massive props as skirts. With an increasing tempo, the ladies now move much faster as they change their formations.
They are getting more creative in expressing the song. The team forms circles and flowers using their props. And it looks quite good!
Perfect is not enough to describe the Black Diamonds’ drill dance performance. From their outfits to their props and the choice of song, everything’s so well-blended.
