Joining the school choir or marching band is usually everyone’s first step into performing live.
It’s here that you get to rub shoulders and spend time with other kids your age, all trying to prove that they can do it.
School marching bands are about as good as the students performing in them, which is to say that they’re usually good enough.
But “good enough” wasn’t enough for the students at the Enka High School marching band.
These kids practiced and practiced and practiced, and they want to show for it.
They got fancy gowns and flags and they don’t want them to go to waste.
So they had a performance scheduled on the school football field, with people lining the bleachers all watching the kids.
The gowns worn by some of the students are already a sign that this isn’t just band practice.
They’ve got something special planned for the night.
Warming up the crowd are the flute and clarinet players. With their feathered hats and fancy, ironed slacks, they give us a few melodies before the other band members join in.
It’s not long before the drummers and trumpet-players back them up.
There isn’t a single missed note in the lineup, and this row even has a bit of a choreography to go with the playing.
Now the performance is about to ramp up.
See those xylophone players in the front row? They’re about to go nuts.
And I wouldn’t have it any other way. The xylophones all begin their part of the performance, and the kids playing them are no slouches.
They’ve got the ear and the muscle memory to boot.
Now it’s time to show the crowd what those gowns and flags were for!
The girls clad in fancy white gowns all get to their positions and begin twirling the bright blue flags. Now the entire band has to give them the best backing music they can muster – which they do.
What’s their next song of choice? Well, what better than Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah”?
The song’s solemn arrangement fits the instruments of choice pretty well.
So the clarinets, flutes, trumpets, and drums all perform Leonard Cohen’s somber classic.
The dancers continue their twirling and waving to the tune of the song.
The audience is being spoiled, and I bet the parents watching are proud.
With the flags still turning and the night still young, the band revs up to do another chorus.
Drummers, xylophones, flutes, and clarinets all together keep the night air in the school field rich with music.
These students worked their butts off to get this good, and this’ll definitely be a big moment they’ll look back on when they’re older.
The band’s not stopping for anyone, and it gives the parents in the crowd enough time to film the whole thing on their phones.
You bet they’re going to share that online and point out where their kids are in the lineup.
It wouldn’t be a marching band without a bit of baton-twirling, would it?
The band closes off with a bang and gets a massive round of applause from the crowd. Well deserved, too.
