Christmas songs are such fun to sing. And they aren’t that difficult to follow and memorize. Except for one.
The 12 days of Christmas has gotten family and friends arguing and laughing for every time it is sang together. It is a mouthful and the words are as colorful and vibrant as the festive season.
That hasn’t stopped artists.
Pentatonix has just literally released their version of the classic. A capella style of course. But this one is so tastefully done that it will have you pressing repeat over and over again. Can you memorize it though?
This cumulative carol builds on each verse, and PTX does the same. It starts off simple, and for each new line, another singer comes in and eventually… you’ll see.
The lyrics are the same. It’s the way these guys (and girl) deliver the song that seems to have been born in the 1700’s. Imagine that.
Who knew that two turtle doves and a partridge in a pear tree would sound this good?
Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, Kirstin Maldonado, Kevin Olusola, and Matt Sallee have unbelievable blending. This has to be the best modern take on the 12 days song. Can you find another one?
The music video is pretty straightforward too. Just them singing, with the screens dividing into different sections for every time they sing together. On the fifth day, there were five golden rings. And a beat box! Now it’s getting interesting!
And those seven swans are getting into the party groove. Kristin has a beautiful voice! That female touch is a welcome break from the male singers. Everything is better with a feminine touch anyway.
PrincessMC commented,
“Looks like PTX understands that we can’t wait for Christmas so they’re bringing Christmas to us early!”
No one’s complaining!
Now there’s a bit of EDM music in there. Also called club music, it’s what kids nowadays enjoy listening to. But now it’s hot chocolate and eggnog.
PTX is gold!
Your true love had better get started. 12 days of presents aren’t that easy to look for. In the meantime, get drumming with the nine drummers! The tempo increases and the background music gets more intense.
How many styles of song are in this one? How many artists would have thought of mixing them all together for use in a classic Christmas song? The varying genres may even help with memorizing the words!
Once PTX gets all the way up to the twelfth day, the group of five runs down the entire song still sticking to the genres for each day. Now different versions of this song usually change up each day’s assigned presents.
PTX goes with . . .
12 Lords a Leaping. 11 Ladies Dancing. 10 Pipers Piping. 9 Drummers Drumming. 8 Maids a Milking. 7 Swans a Swimming. 6 Geese a Laying. 5 Golden Rings. 4 Calling Birds. 3 French Hens. 2 Turtle Doves, and a Partridge in a Pear Tree.
Spot the difference when you listen to other renditions. Just remember to take a breather if you’re planning to sing along.
It’s on their new holiday album, We need a little Christmas. It’s well worth it. More than enough holiday songs to keep you and your family happy while you decorate and prepare for the most wonderful time of the year. Now press repeat!
